About the Event
The Cedar Commissions was a three day, virtual event showcasing the newly created works of six emerging Minnesotan artists and composers. Each night will feature pre-recorded performances of two different artists, back-to-back, debuting their new music on The Cedar stage and sharing their perspectives on their work and creative process.
Night one features classical composer AJ Isaacson-Zvidzwa as she explores the arc of her triumphant journey with mental illness in a piece for string quartet and soprano.
On night two, Farrington Llewellyn opens up a door for conversations around mental health and trauma including elements of hip-hop and R&B, and Tearra Oso explores historical storytelling and healing through Bomba, a traditional Afro Puerto Rican music style, fused with R&B, hip-hop, and pop.
As night three closes out, Hassan Shahid explores what it means to be a Black Muslim father through soulful, acoustic guitar-driven songwriting, while S U N A H dives into the Hmong language’s relationship with the LGBTQ+ community through hip hop and electronic dance music.
